| Choosing and applying a title.
There are a few aspects to choosing and applying a title that are important.
They are:
- Choosing a title effect that works for you.
- Understanding timing and how it applies to your
title and clip.
- Adjusting the options of your title effects.
- Applying your title effect.
Choosing a title effect that
works for you.
- Choose the “Titles” option menu

- Choose the title effect you want to apply.

- This small preview window will show you what the effect looks like.

- Type the text you want your title effect to display in this area.

- If you are unfamiliar with all of the different title effects, I
suggest you play around and try all of them. You have not made any
changes to your movie until you drag the title into your filmstrip.
- There are differences between the different title effects that you
should be aware of.
- Titles that are called “Multiple” will have multiple
titles that display on one clip. For example the Bounce Across Multiple
effect below will first have a have a title that says “This
will appear first”. That title will then go off screen and
a second title will say “This will appear second". Both
of these will be on the same clip.

You can have more than two titles with these multiple titles effects
by clicking this plus button. You can reduce the number of multiple
titles by clicking this minus button.

| |
- Some effects such as Scrolling Block will allow you to type in
a paragraph rather than a just a line or two. You can differentiate
these effects because they give you more room to type your text.

- Now that you have found an effect that works and entered your text,
you can click on "Preview". This will give you a preview
of your clip in the monitor window.

- Understanding timing and how it applies to your title
and clip.
- Timing is very important when applying these titles to clips (If
you are creating a clip over black this is not an issue). iMovie displays
time in the format minutes : seconds : frames. There are 30 frames
in a second. For example 6:20 means six seconds and 20 frames or about
6.66 seconds.
- Your title CANNOT be longer than the clip you are applying it to.
The length of your title effect is shown here.

- The length of your clip is shown here.

- In this example above my title effect is 6:20 and my clip is only
6:07. Therefore, this will not work. You can adjust the time of your
clip by using these sliders. Sliding them right lengthens the title.
Sliding them left shortens the title. Speed is the length the title
effect. Pause is how long the title will sit on the screen after the
effect has finished.

- Now, in the example below, my title is short enough to be applied
to the clip.
- Because the title is shorter than the clip 4:00<6:07. When you
apply it, your clip will be cut into two. One clip will be 4:00 and
display the title. The next clip will be 2:07 and not display the
title. This is fine. The clips will play continuous and look fine.

Adjusting the options of your
title effects.
- Some title effects will have other options that effect the way it
appears. You can adjust them with sliders that appear here.

- This slider adjusts the size of your text. I suggest you use large
text since it is always easier to read.

- This option allows you to adjust the font of your text.

- This option allows you to adjust the color of your text.

- Check this option if you plan on exporting your iMovie as a quicktime
file. This will be the most common way you will use iMovie so I suggest
you always check it.

- These arrows will change the direction of the title effect.

Applying your title
effect. |
- Once you have the title effect chosen, your text entered and all
adjustments made, you are ready to apply the title.
- You will want to click and hold on the title effect and drag it
into you filmstrip. The other clips will move out of your way. If
it is over black release it where you want it. If it is over a clip
release it in front of that clip.

- Your title effect will now be applied. This red line indicates the
clip is rendering. I suggest you let it finish rendering before moving
on.

- Now that a title has been applied to the clip this indicator will
appear at the top.

- Notice there are now two clips, one with the 4:00 title and then
the remainder of the clip (2:07) without the title.

| How to remove an applied title. |
- To remove a title, select the clip and use the delete button on your
keyboard to delete it. (Use the Delete button not the Del button).
- Refer to the previous section “Applying
Titles” if you have questions on selecting a clip.
- ** When you select a clip and hit delete, it will delete the last
effect, or title you applied. There are indicator icons for applied
effects or titles at the top of the clip. If you have removed or never
applied an effect or title there won’t be an indicator at the
top of the clip and the delete button will delete the clip. The indicator
icon for titles looks like this.
